So I decided to slow my company, to show just summer and winter. See this dress?”-he pointed to a bias cut linen mini-halter neck, suspended on a narrow rope-“This is 500 euros in the shop.”Ĭoming off the success of his spring show made him “question myself, what am I doing in fashion? It’s incredible what happened, but still, it’s important to tell young people today: I am successful-but I still have doubts. “I am happy that I got the prices down again. I am selling clothes, so it was going back to things that are minimal and effortless, like a dress people can wear to a wedding and a few times afterwards,” he said. Inside, Porte Jacquemus was talking backstage about serving his generation. The anticipation had a sense of international scale on an almost rockstar level. There’d been a crush of thousands outside, a crowd as big as the ones which used to trek to see Jean Paul Gaultier in Paris in the ’80s. The sisters Hadid and a gang of today’s hottest supermodels, male and female, came to walk around the vast stadium at La Defense Porte Jacquemus had booked for his co-ed collection for fall. It means that everyone who’s anyone of his age is flocking to his show. How could Simon Porte Jacquemus possibly top the internet-breaking success of the show in a lavender field in Provence he held last summer? The fame of that phenomenal event, with its incredible fuchsia runway, gathered 1.8 million followers to his Instagram-not to mention his ridiculous-cute micro-bag campaign.

And if Microsoft implemented softsled (using a PC as an extender) it would be that much better. Then you could add on one or more extenders to the setup without needing another PC. This means allow the tuners to be installed on the WHS computer and not require another computer to do the MediaCenter work. What I mean by that is this: Microsoft needs to enable WHS to be the HTPC server for the home. To make the WHS a true, Media Center Server, it really needs to be able to be the one, single Media Server for the entire HTPC setup – think WHS = digital media hub. Media Center Updates are Good Step – But More is NeededI love the new updates this beta brings to WHS – especially the Media Center-centric updates. If you would like to see the new WHS features for MediaCenter in action, check out this post by Adam at for a nice screencast. Better WHS support for netbooks with low resolution screens.Windows Search 4 implemented for faster search and indexing times.Other Power Pack 3 Beta Features Include: All of the new menu items do work on Media Center extenders.Stats include: Storage available, hard drive stats, computers being backed up & their status, list of shared folders, media count, network health, and home server hardware & manufacturer info. A new Media Center menu option on the extras menu to View WHS stats. That includes compression into Zune and other portable media formats. As part of the “Move TV Recordings” function described above, you can also choose to compress/transcode those shows to save hard drive space.A nice feature is the ability to transfer future, scheduled episodes of a given show as well. There is an option to select individual shows or entire series. A new Media Center menu option on the main menu of Media Center called “TV Archive.” This menu item allows you to transfer recorded TV programming to your WHS machine. This makes that content available for Windows Media Center as well as other Windows applications like Windows Explorer, Windows Media Player and others that use Windows 7 Libraries. You will now have Music, Photos and Videos shared folders from the WHS available to Windows 7 Libraries. The new Power Pack brings the following new features to Media Center: Once installed, you’ll notice a new Home Server selection in Windows Media Center menu. The MediaCenter bloggers were abuzz yesterday about the new WHS Media Center features so we’ll focus on those today.įirst you’ll need to install (or update) the Windows Home Server Connector software on your Windows Media Center PC. It doesn’t allow you to use WHS as your one, MediaCenter “server”, but it is a step in the right direction. As of 2023, this remains the Ravens' longest offensive play in team history. In the Ravens' 2000 AFC title game against the Oakland Raiders, he caught a short pass on third down and 18 from his own four-yard line and took it 96 yards for a touchdown, the only touchdown the Ravens scored, en route to a 16–3 Ravens' win. In a 1993 playoff game against the Los Angeles Raiders, Sharpe tied a postseason record with 13 receptions for 156 yards and a touchdown. He's a threat." Sharpe was selected to the All-Pro Team four times, played in eight Pro Bowls (1992–1998, 2001) and amassed over 1,000 receiving yards in three different seasons. He's proven that he can make the big plays. Ozzie Newsome, the Ravens' general manager, said of Sharpe during his career: "I think he's a threat when he's on the field. From there, he retired to become an NFL analyst for CBS. After a two-year stint with the Baltimore Ravens, where he won another championship ring at Super Bowl XXXV, he returned to the Broncos. After the 1997 season championship – his first – he appeared on General Mills' Wheaties boxes with four other Broncos. He remained with Denver until 1999, winning two championship rings at Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII in the process. This quickly paid off, as Sharpe caught 53 passes in his third season. After two mediocre seasons as a receiver in which he caught just 29 passes, Denver converted him to a tight end. He was eventually selected in the seventh round with the 192nd pick by the Denver Broncos. In addition to playing Division II college football, Sharpe's size (6'2", 230 pounds) was considered too large for a receiver and too small for a tight end. Professional careerĭespite his stellar college career, Sharpe was not considered a highly rated prospect in the 1990 NFL Draft. He was inducted into the Division II Football Hall of Fame in 2009, Savannah State's athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, and the Black College Football Hall of Fame in 2013. Sharpe finished his college career with 192 receptions for 3,744 yards and 40 touchdowns. As a senior, Sharpe caught 61 passes for 1,312 yards and 18 touchdowns, including three games with more than 200 yards. He led the Tigers' football team to their best records in the program's history: 7–3 in 1988 and 8–1 in 1989. He was also selected as a Kodak Division II All-American in 1989. Sharpe was a three-time All- Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference selection from 1987 to 1989 and the SIAC Player of the Year in 1987. In track, he competed in jumping and throwing events. I didn't graduate magna cum laude, I graduated 'Thank you, Lawdy!'" At Savannah State, he played football and basketball, and also competed in track and field. He once joked, "We were so poor, a robber once broke into our house and we ended up robbing the robber." He commented, "I was a terrible student. Sharpe, the younger brother of former NFL star wide receiver Sterling Sharpe, grew up in Glennville, Georgia, where he was an all-state player in three sports at Glennville High School. He was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011. Following his retirement, Sharpe appeared as an analyst for The NFL Today on CBS Sports and co-hosted Skip and Shannon: Undisputed on Fox Sports 1 with Skip Bayless from 2016 to 2023. Sharpe retired as the NFL leader in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns by a tight end. In between his Broncos tenures, Sharpe was a member of Baltimore Ravens for two seasons, with whom he received an eighth Pro Bowl selection and won a third Super Bowl title. During his 12 non-consecutive seasons with Denver, he was selected to seven consecutive Pro Bowls and four first-team All-Pros, and won two consecutive Super Bowl titles. Sharpe played college football at Savannah State University and was selected by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 1990 NFL Draft. He was also the first NFL tight end to amass over 10,000 receiving yards. Regarded as one of the greatest tight ends of all time, he ranks third in tight end receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns. Shannon Sharpe (born June 26, 1968) is an American former football tight end who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons, primarily with the Denver Broncos. There are exceptions, I think, mostly concerning my preference for larger-scale structural patterns like stanzaic regularity, which is something I typically get a feel for early in the composition of a poem and then adhere to. While I’m usually aware, in a way that feels as much bodily as mindful, of the effects of every line break, say, and of what it feels like for sense to be, as Milton says, “variously drawn out from one verse into another,” none of this is transpires in a way I would call predetermined, or even completely deliberate. That said, compared to most other poets throughout time, my own forms tend to be pretty flexible-if there’s often a strong sense of rhythm to what I do, I almost never write in actual meter when I rhyme, it’s mostly loosely and while there’s often a fair amount of assonance and consonance in what I write, for the most part, it’s instinctual, spontaneous (at least at this point). The words aren’t there just to refer to what isn’t. I can’t account for every one of them, but on a primal level, underneath them all, as far as poems go, I’ve always felt that poetry’s ancient emphasis on the physical properties of language, and the use of certain of these properties (such as quantity or syllable count or stress) as leading principles in its composition, is what most distinguishes poetry from other kinds of writing, and what makes it most palpable, most present. History is full of evidence not simply of how wrong we have been, but of how we have used our wrongness to support our avarice and ego and atrocity.Īs for form, I’ve always been interested in patterning of all kinds, probably for a lot of reasons. Basically, I think my interest in borders is really just a constant awareness of how humans have come to organize the world and give it meaning, and while I’m weirdly moved by our need to do so, I’m also wary of our habit of mistaking the way we organize things, which is a kind of fiction, for the way things truly are. Other species might define us very differently than ourselves. They exist not for their own sake, but to serve some human need or appetite-beginning with basic cognition and self-preservation, but then also phobia, greed and so forth-and they are contingent on human perception. Not unrelatedly, my interest in the borders that humans draw is informed, I think, both by an awareness of our need for them, as well as by a suspicion regarding how they are, to some degree, arbitrary, no matter how necessary or real they come to seem. But moreover, I liked how it seemed to reflect on its own polysemy, as if the manyness of its meanings was itself problematic-which I take to mean difficult to define or to determine complicated, intricate, which to me, as writer, actually isn’t a problem at all, but an essential condition of art, as well as of consciousness. The phrase suggested a lot of things that matter to me as a distractable Gemini in our nation’s most populous city. Timothy Donnelly: From the moment I read the title of Peter Unger’s essay “The Problem of the Many,” even before I had read the essay itself, I knew I had to name a book that. What is your relationship to form when you write? Is it predetermined? What do you really think of it? In other words, in what way is it necessary, and how does it relate to the book's insistence on the dissolution of boundaries? All of the poems adhere to some fairly strict forms. Monica Fambrough: The idea of borders is important in this book (the title itself referring to a philosophical problem, which is also a scientific problem, of defining any particle-based object whose boundaries are unclear)-I am interested in the formal implications here. He places high demands on his poems and his audience, but it is his faith in them, and us, that ultimately allows for transcendence. -Monica Fambrough The language is revered, and it is exhaustive. The past, present, and future live together in his work. Donnelly’s poems enact a kind of alchemy. Having known and worked with Timothy since his second collection, The Cloud Corporation, was published to much acclaim in 2010, I was excited to learn about the process of a poet I considered to be among the most insistent and precise of his generation. Timothy Donnelly’s third full collection of poems, The Problem of the Many, was released in 2019 from Wave Books. Furthermore, since the electronic structure of every element is unique, the radiation absorbed represents a unique property of each individual element and it can be measured.Īn atomic absorption spectrometer uses these basic principles and applies them in practical quantitative analysis. The radiant energy absorbed by the electrons is directly related to the transition that occurs during this process. When the atom is exposed to its own unique wavelength, it can absorb the energy (photons) and electrons move from a ground state to excited states. The electrons within an atom exist at various energy levels. The amount of light absorbed at this wavelength is directly proportional to the concentration of the absorbing ions or atoms. When a sample containing copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni), for example, is exposed to light at the characteristic wavelength of Cu, then only the Cu atoms or ions will absorb this light. Firstly, all atoms or ions can absorb light at specific, unique wavelengths. The basic principles of AAS can be expressed as follows. Today, most analytical laboratories will boast at least one atomic absorption spectrophotometer. It took him several more years to convince manufacturers to use atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) for the detection of metals, but he eventually succeeded. By teatime on Monday morning, he showed that it could be done. Walsh decided to measure absorption, not emission. The normal procedure in spectroscopy was to vaporize an element and measure the emission spectra, but this technique was flawed and produced inaccurate results. They were able to reproduce the black lines observed in the solar spectrum in the laboratory, thus allowing the identification of absorbing atoms in the corona through their emission spectra.Īlan Walsh, 2 a Lancashire-born physicist was working in his garden on a Sunday morning somewhere in the early 1950s when an idea that would solve a huge analytical chemistry puzzle popped up in his mind: how to accurately measure small concentrations of metallic elements by spectroscopy. Bunsen and Kirchoff demonstrated soon after that each chemical element had a characteristic color or spectrum when heated to incandescence (e.g., sodium (Na) yellow potassium (K) violet). In 1832, Brewster concluded that atomic vapors in the atmosphere absorbed some of the radiation from the Sun resulting in the detection of these lines. The English chemist, Wollaston, was the first to observe dark lines in the solar spectrum that became known as Fraunhofer lines. What are the applications of atomic absorption spectroscopy?
